Climate Smart Agriculture Asia

The Uzbekistan Climate Smart Agriculture session explores a comprehensive approach to addressing the ecological challenges and promoting sustainable development in the Aral Sea region through innovative agricultural and environmental practices.

Water-Saving Technologies for Climate Adaptation: This presentation delves into the significant role of water-saving technologies, such as drip and sprinkle irrigation, in enhancing climate change adaptation for populations in the desiccation-affected Aral Sea region. Highlighting the GGGI Uzbekistan’s KOICA-funded ‘Green Rehabilitation Investment Project for Karakalpakstan Republic to Address Impacts of the Aral Sea Crisis (Aral Sea GRIP),’ the session will showcase successful implementation of these technologies in four project districts, demonstrating their impact on mitigating the ecological crisis.

Karatal Willow Trees in Climate-Smart Agriculture: The session will also cover the environmental, economic, and cultural importance of Karatal willow trees in the Karakalpakstan Aral Sea Basin. It will discuss the benefits and challenges of integrating Karatal willow into climate-smart agricultural practices, particularly in the context of the Yashil Makon and other afforestation initiatives. Emphasizing the potential of Karatal willow for windbreaks, agroforestry, and local livelihoods, the presentation will address the skepticism among farmers and highlight efforts to cultivate a National Tree planting culture.

Policy Recommendations for Sustainable Landscapes and Agriculture: Finally, the session will present key findings from a white paper developed by GGGI Uzbekistan and the UN Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea Region (UNMPHSTF). Based on extensive literature review and analysis, the white paper offers policy recommendations for sustainable landscapes, climate-smart agriculture, and forestry development. These recommendations aim to inform and support the update of the Integrated Roadmap for the Aral Sea region, the formulation of the revised UN Aral Sea MPHSTF Strategy, and the development of national strategies on climate change and food security.

Through these combined presentations, the session on Uzbekistan Climate Smart Agriculture aims to provide a holistic view of the innovative solutions and strategic policies necessary for fostering resilience and sustainable development in the Aral Sea region.
