Adaptation Financing

The “adaptation finance gap” (UNEP, 2023) now stands at between US$194 billion and US$366 billion per year, while one out of six countries still does not have an adaptation plan. Climate specialists and governments point to a lack of data, political will, financing and design capacity, but a major challenge cited by stakeholders undertaking NAPs is the usability of the documents themselves as ways of leveraging financing and bringing projects to stakeholders, and to funders of adaptation projects. Key questions being asked by this group of partners are: Could there be enhancements inherent in examining the ways in which these plans are represented, graphically, cartographically, or digitally? What would it take to bring climate data into mobile handsets and under the agency of those that are the most impacted with change? How would more accessible and transparent maps and data enable enhanced adaptation investments to flow?
