This session focuses on innovative waste management solutions in Africa. In Ethiopia, coffee processing waste presents a significant environmental challenge and a promising opportunity for resource utilization. By converting waste into food, bio-products, and bioenergy, particularly benefiting women farmers, scalable business models aim to reduce poverty and advance gender equality. IvoireGreenGenius in Ivory Coast leverages technology to optimize waste collection and recycling, promoting green economic opportunities and social inclusion through a mobile application that incentivizes households.
In Rwanda, the GGGI’s Waste to Resources Project addresses the challenges of increased waste from rapid urbanization. By establishing facilities for waste sorting, biowaste processing, and managing the Nduba dumpsite, the project aims to create green jobs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve waste management services. The session will discuss the project results, lessons learned, and business models for sustainable waste management infrastructure.
