Overview:

According to the Global Status Report (2017) by the IEA, total global floor area of buildings is estimated to double by 2060, with over 50% of that increase likely to occur within the next 20 years. Furthermore, as per the IEA’s NetZero 2050 report (2021), mostly in Asia and Africa, GHG emissions from buildings are a key driver for national emissions, with increased cooling demand driving GHG. Embodied carbon accounts for about 10% of global energy related GHG emissions and approximately 20-25% of building life-cycle emissions according to the Global ABC Global Status Report (2021) by UNEP. This session is focused on deliberating on the importance and usage of innovative natural building materials like earth bricks, clay bricks, clay tiles, timber, bamboo etc. for achieving affordable green building. The discussions would bring experiences and opportunities for Africa and Asian region as well as highlighting GGGI’s Asia-Low Carbon Building Transition (ALCBT) program in 5-Asian countries where embedded carbon concept in typical building construction materials (Cement, Iron & Steel, Glass etc.) would be considered.
